今日の単語 Velcro

今日の単語は商品名です。ベルクロ？全然聞いたことがなかったですが、どうやらマジックテープのことみたいです。

マジックテープは Velcro で通じる、と単純に覚えるだけで今日はOKですから、Velcro の説明文とそのほかにも英語で商品名が使われている例がないかをちらっと見ておきます。Velcro は hook-and-loop fastener と言えば商品名を使わないで済むし、一応誰にでも通じるようです。

日本でもマジックテープは商品名で、一般名として面ファスナーといいますが、面ファスナーと言ってもわからない人は大勢いるような気がします、、、他にはセロテープやウォシュレットなどが商品名で呼んでしまうモノの代表例ですね。

Velcro / マジックテープ

Velcro is a brand name for a type of fastener that consists of two strips of material: one with tiny hooks and the other with small loops. When the two strips are pressed together, the hooks catch in the loops, creating a secure closure. To open it, you simply pull the strips apart.

「ベルクロは、フックとループが組み合わさった留め具のブランド名です。片方のテープには小さなフックが、もう片方には小さなループがついており、この二つを押し合わせるとフックがループに引っかかり、しっかりと留まります。開けるときは、テープを引き離すだけです。」

本当にみんな Velcro と呼んでるの？

Most English native speakers are familiar with “Velcro” as it’s a well-known brand name that has become synonymous with hook-and-loop fasteners. However, the term is often used generically to describe similar fasteners, regardless of the brand. That said, there might be some people who don’t know the brand name but will understand the concept if you describe it as a fastener with hooks and loops that stick together.

Post-it – Used to describe sticky notes in general, not just those made by 3M.

Q-Tips – Often used to refer to cotton swabs, regardless of the brand.

Tupperware – Used generically for any type of food storage containers, not just those made by Tupperware Brands.

ChapStick – Refers to any lip balm, not just the one made by ChapStick.

Google – Sometimes used as a verb meaning to search for information online, regardless of the search engine used.

タッパーやバンドエイドは日本と同じ。というか正しくは日本にタッパーやバンドエイドがなかった時代に日本に入ってきた優れモノですね。ポストイットは日本語でいまひとつ呼びにくいせいか、意外と付箋が定着しているようにも感じます。
