外国語学習につきものなモノ、それは pitfall ではないでしょうか。英語と日本語間での翻訳・通訳の場合には特に。わからない英単語に出逢って、英和辞典などで意味を調べてそこに書いてある訳をすぐ使う場合は本当に注意したいですね。pitfall の可能性大です。

私がどっぷり落とし穴に落ちた話

ひとに助言をする時の表現として、「〇〇したほうがいいよ」と言いたいシチュエーションはまあまあありますよね。私が教科書で習ったのは、should ～　と　had better ～　でした。

英和辞典の表記は

should ～　〇〇すべきだ

had better ～　〇〇したほうがいい

となっておりました。

日本人なら、あるいは日本語が母国語の方なら、当然「〇〇すべき」はちょっと上からだしキツイ印象で、「〇〇したほうがいい」はやんわり控えめな印象を受けます。

私が16歳で初めてホームステイをしたとき、お家の奥様に ” You had better ～” と言いました。何を伝えたのか話の内容はまったく覚えていないのですが、いつもは超優しいミセスの顔がみるみる赤くなったのは今でも鮮明に記憶しています。その場で何かまずいことを言ったに違いない、と察することができた16歳の私を褒めたいですが、咄嗟に学校で習った英語について、そして相手を怒らせる意図がないことを頑張って説明できたためピンチはチャンスを変えて新しい学びを得ることができました。ミセスの丁寧な説明のおかげで、その時に初めて、had better という表現は大変きつくて、失礼で、ほぼ自分が使う必要なんてないんだな、と理解できました。had better は〇〇したほうがいい、さもなくば容赦ないぞ、どうなっても知らないぞ、的なニュアンスだということでした。

せっかくですので、should と had better のニュアンスの違いを確認しておきましょう。

2. “You had better do something”

• Meaning: This phrase is used to give strong advice or a warning. It implies that there will be negative consequences if the suggested action is not taken. It is more urgent and forceful than “you should.”
• Tone: Firm, sometimes even threatening or authoritative. It indicates that the speaker believes there is a strong need for the action to be taken.
• Example: “You had better study for your exam, or you might fail.” (This implies that not studying will lead to a negative outcome, and it’s strongly advised to avoid that.)

ひとつ言えるのは、日本語では動詞のバラエティがとても少ないため、ニュアンスまで反映させながら忠実にひとことで訳せる単語が少ないということですよね。今回の should も had better も、〇〇したほうがいい、になってしまいますから余計に注意が必要です。翻訳や通訳をする人の腕が試されますね。
