Mozambique Investigates Sexual Exploitation of Women Inmates – This week, Mozambique’s government appointed members of a commission of inquiry to investigate allegations of sexual exploitation and other rights violations of female inmates by guards at the Ndlavela Women’s Prison in Maputo. Minister of Justice Helena Kida also announced the suspension of the prison’s entire management. But government measures need to go further to ensure accountability for those responsible, provide reparations, and determine whether abuses are taking place in other prisons in Mozambique. Beyond Cruelty: Do We Need A New SDG To Fight Animal Exploitation? New charitable foundation Beyond Cruelty calls on the United Nations to add a ‘Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 18’ to its objectives. It believes that the United Nations’ 17 SDGs cannot be achievable if animal exploitation continues to prevail in the world. The 17 SDGs, which are part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are focussed on social, economic and environmental development issues like hunger, health, education, gender equality, sanitation, affordable energy, inequality, urbanisation, global warming, and environment. However, according to Beyond Cruelty, none of these can be achieved without adding SDG 18: Zero Animal Exploitation. (from Green Queen)

Germany passes supply chain law to curb exploitation in Asia – HAMBURG, Germany — Germany’s parliament on Friday passed a supply chain law that is set to disrupt the way the country’s companies, as well as German subsidiaries of foreign companies, conduct business in Asia. The act, which has been years in the planning, requires companies of a certain size to conduct due diligence to ensure that their direct suppliers of goods and services do not breach human rights, safety or environmental rules. While it does not stipulate civil liability — meaning managers do not risk being jailed for suppliers’ misconduct — it does allow for hefty fines of up to 2% of the company’s annual revenues for any breaches. Companies that are not covered by the scope of the act must only take action if they are aware of violations, sparing them from the obligation to actively conduct due diligence. (from Nikkei Asia)
