今日の単語 polar opposite

polar は極地という意味で馴染みがありますね。例えば polar bear ホッキョクグマ、south pole 南極、とか。最近だと bipolar 双極性の、二極化した、の意味もよく耳にします。ということで、polar opposite は正反対の、という意味になります。

普段の英語での会話で「真逆」といいたいときにこの単語がさらりとでてきたら楽かもしれないと思ったので今日の単語に選びました。私も含めて日本人の同僚は「真逆ですよ」と言いたいときに”不完全燃焼”に感じる時があります。もちろん opposite だけでも「正反対」の意味は伝えられると思うのですが、「逆ですよ」と「真逆ですよ」は強さが違いますね。
